Apple is preparing to roll out the iOS 16.2 update as the next major software milestone for iPhone users, coming hot on the heels of iOS 16.1. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman in his Power On newsletter, iPadOS 16.2 is expected to arrive by mid-December — roughly within two weeks of the report — bringing a wave of new features to both iPhone and iPad.
What to Expect from the iOS 16.2 Update
Apple has already seeded the first beta of the iOS 16.2 update and iPadOS 16.2 to registered developers and public beta testers. While Apple has not officially announced a feature list, the beta builds offer a clear picture of what is coming.
One of the headline additions is expanded Live Activities support inside the built-in Apple TV app. This will let users follow select sports games in real time directly from the Lock Screen or via the Dynamic Island on iPhone 14 Pro models — no need to open the app. Alongside this, a new sleep-tracking widget option is expected to be available for the Lock Screen, giving users quick glance-access to sleep data recorded by their Apple Watch.
Freeform App Finally Launches for Everyone
A major feature debuted at WWDC that has been held back from the public release is Freeform, Apple's collaborative whiteboard app. Freeform allows users to work together with friends and colleagues in real time on an infinite canvas, supporting images, drawings, sticky notes, links, and more. The app has been available to developers and beta testers since the early iOS 16.2 betas, and is now set to ship to all users alongside the public release of iOS 16.2, iPadOS 16.2, and macOS 13.1 Ventura.
Key Features Expected in iOS 16.2
- Live Activities for Apple TV app: Track live sports scores on the Lock Screen and Dynamic Island in real time.
- Sleep widget on Lock Screen: A new widget option to display sleep data at a glance.
- Freeform app: Apple's collaborative infinite-canvas app rolls out to all iPhone, iPad, and Mac users.
- Bug fixes and performance improvements consistent with a .2 point release.
When Will iOS 16.3 Arrive?
Following the release of iOS 16.2, Apple is reportedly planning to push iOS 16.3 around February or March of the following year. This gives the company roughly two to three months between updates — a cadence consistent with previous iOS release cycles. Users should expect iOS 16.3 to bring additional refinements and potentially more features that are still in development.
How to Install the iOS 16.2 Beta
To try the iOS 16.2 update before its public release, developers can download it through the Apple Developer portal, while non-developers can sign up for the Apple Beta Software Program. Both options require enrolling the device and downloading the configuration profile, after which updates appear through the standard Settings > General > Software Update path.
