Lava is set to bring new smartphones to India, with the company confirming a launch event on January 7. Following the recent arrival of the Lava BeU at Rs 6,888, the brand has signalled that more devices are on the way in the first week of January 2021. Here is what Lava has officially said and what we already know.
Lava to bring new smartphones on January 7
Lava has officially confirmed it will launch new smartphones on January 7 in the country. The plan was first hinted at during the BeU launch, when the company said it would bring more devices in the first week of January 2021.
Teasing the event on Twitter, Lava said, 'The day when the smartphone industry will not be the same.' The company has framed January 7 as the moment it enters the game in a more serious way.
Why domestic brands are pushing forward
Anti-China sentiment in the country has given domestic brands room to make a comeback. Micromax moved first with its In Note 1 and In 1b budget phones, and now Lava is moving fast to follow.
What the Lava BeU reveals about the strategy
With the Lava BeU, the company revealed its intention for the entry-level market. It is an Android Go (Go Edition) device aimed at budget buyers, and it offers a hint of the direction Lava may take with its upcoming phones.
- Entry-level positioning at Rs 6,888
- Android Go (Go Edition) software
- Dual rear cameras
- Large 4060mAh battery

Who Lava plans to take on
It is not yet known which smartphones Lava will launch on January 7, or in which budget. However, the brand intends to compete with phones that come within Rs 15,000 from the likes of Xiaomi, Realme, Micromax and Samsung.
That focus makes sense, because demand for smartphones under Rs 15,000 is the highest in the country. This year Xiaomi and Realme launched phones with MediaTek chipsets, while Samsung used the Exynos 9611 processor in its phones. You can follow more from the brand on our Lava coverage.
