Huawei is turning its attention to its next flagship line, the P50 series, expected in the first half of 2021. Reports suggest Samsung Display and LG Display will supply its OLED panels, while the phones will run Huawei's in-house Kirin 9000 chip - even as US restrictions continue to shape the company's plans.
Huawei P50 series launch window
Having recently launched the Mate 40 flagship, Huawei is now focused on its P-series. Despite US government restrictions on its supply line, the company is performing well and is expected to bring the P50 series in the first half of 2021 - likely in the March/April window it has used before.
Samsung and LG to supply the displays
Reports reveal that Samsung Display and LG Display are ready to supply OLED panels for the new models. Samsung Display secured a license to do business with Huawei in October this year, and LG is reportedly able to start supplying the company as well.
Powered by the in-house Kirin 9000
The P50 series is expected to use Huawei's in-house Kirin 9000 chipset, produced by its HiSilicon division. Huawei introduced the Kirin 9000 with its Mate series and has called it a performance beast. The company stockpiled millions of these processors before the US restrictions took effect, but would need Qualcomm and MediaTek to keep building new devices beyond that supply. Both chipmakers have applied for licenses to do business with Huawei.
No Google apps on board
Huawei is leaning on its in-house processor and plans to produce most components itself. While its flagships are powerful from camera to hardware, the US restrictions mean the company cannot offer Google services - so you will not find any Google apps on Huawei's phones.
