Google Tensor Processor: What We Know
Google confirmed the move via an official tweet, revealing that the new in-house chip will be called Tensor. The Google Tensor processor will debut inside the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, making these the first Google phones built around a fully custom silicon design. The decision mirrors Apple's own pivot away from Intel when it introduced its proprietary chipset for the MacBook line.
Following Google's announcement, Qualcomm issued a statement clarifying that it continues to work with Google and that future Pixel products will still be offered with Snapdragon options. Despite that assurance, Qualcomm's stock experienced a noticeable dip in the immediate aftermath.
Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro, and the Pixel 5a
While the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro will carry the Tensor chip, Google's mid-range Pixel 5a is on a separate track. Reports indicate the Pixel 5a will launch in August, with sales beginning the same month. It is expected to be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G processor — not the new Tensor silicon.
The Pixel 5a reportedly carries the internal codename Barbet, though Google has not officially confirmed this name, the launch date, or any other specifications. Design-wise, the phone is said to closely resemble the Pixel 5 and the Pixel 4a 5G. Adding weight to the India-launch rumours, the Pixel 5a has already appeared on the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) website, a common regulatory milestone ahead of an official Indian market release.
